Three elements structure your natal chart: the Sun sign, the Moon sign, and the ascendant. Most people only know their Sun sign — the one in magazine horoscopes — but that's just a third of the story.

The Sun sign (your "astrological sign" in the common sense) reflects your essence, your deep identity, what you seek to express in life. It's determined by the Sun's position at your birth — Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and so on. The Moon sign, far less known to the public, describes your inner life, your emotions, your need for security. Two Aries-Sun people, one with a Cancer Moon and the other with a Capricorn Moon, behave very differently day to day.

The ascendant, finally, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It defines your social style, how you approach the world, and the first impression you leave. It depends on the exact birth time — hence its critical role in a consultation. Around these three pillars sit the personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars), which color your communication, romantic relationships, and action energy. Vedic astrology (jyotish), originating in India, uses the sidereal zodiac — aligned with the actual positions of constellations in the sky. The Vedic tradition emphasizes the karmic dimension more strongly and uses specific techniques (dashas, divisional charts).

Hellenistic astrology, recently rediscovered through scholars like Robert Schmidt and Chris Brennan, brings back the ancient techniques of Greek and Roman astrologers (zodiacal releasing, annual profections). It's a more predictive approach, structured around planetary "sects" (diurnal vs nocturnal planets).

Each school has its strengths. Modern Western astrology suits psychological introspection well; Vedic is powerful for karmic timing; Hellenistic for technical prediction.
